Look in the Mirror

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?

This is probably a boring answer, but I wouldn’t want to be anyone else, even if I could be. I’m enough for me. Yes, I could do with more money, a home of my own, and a partner, but I’d want all those things as myself, not living out the fantasies as someone else. I’m proud of all my achievements, but I also own all my mistakes and regrets. The man writing this is a result of everything, good and bad, that’s ever happened to him. It’s difficult enough to be ourselves in this era of too-fast technology and seemingly endless political controversy and upheaval. Life is unique and complex, and we all need to appreciate ourselves more.

100 Percent? Must Try Harder.

If you could permanently ban a word from general usage, which one would it be? Why?

It’s more of a phrase. This trend of people saying ‘100 percent’ instead of ‘definitely’ or even just ‘yes’. I mean, it’s probably better than ‘110 percent’, but not really. At least when people used to say ‘110 percent’ it showed some kind of aspiration to reach beyond their limitations, but ‘100 percent’? No thank you.

Live Action Writing

I’m really enjoying my Live Action Writing Show. I’ve completed 11 of them now (on instagram live). The concept is that I spend 10 minutes typing a piece of flash fiction (in this case, 100 words) and then read it out live on air. Obviously, this has a high possibility of personal embarrassment, but it’s gone surprisingly well. I’ll publish a select few on here over the coming months.

‘No Way Back’

Hello again. I’ve not posted any updates for a while, but rest assured, I have been working hard. I’ve started writing my new novel, which is a cross between ‘The Time Machine’, ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, and possibly ‘Bridget Jones Diary’, although, having never read that last one, that description might not be entirely accurate. I’ll give you plot details in future posts, but for now, here’s the first draft of the prologue.

A Beginning of Sorts

Hi. I’m Rhys. Rhys Baker. It’s been a rough few months – or is it years? – it’s hard to tell with all the time travel in my system. Anyway, a few months back, or whatever – that’s when all my troubles started. Maybe your life’s been even worse – I can’t really see how – and my story will be a welcome distraction from your pain. If so, I’m glad to be of service. I think.
Sometimes, events are beyond our power. We like to believe that we ultimately have control over our fates, but, as my tragic tale will prove, control is as much an illusion as the belief that our pain lessens with the passing of time. In fact, although I couldn’t have known it at the, well, time; time is the very thing that caused all my pain in the first bloody place. I kind of did it all in the wrong order. Don’t worry; you’ll get what I mean, eventually.

I’ll start at what I thought was the beginning…

Unlearning…

One poor writing habit that I am working hard at unlearning is the habit of waiting until I have something profound to talk/write about and waiting until the feeling to write grips me before I do so. Waiting for such fine moments emanates from that underlying need for control and perfection, which is basically impossible. […]
